Lakalaka: Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity Seminar
(12th – 13th February, 2008)

On Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th February 2008, the Secretary of the Tonga Traditions Committee, Hon. Albert Tu'ivanuavou Vaea hosted a Lakalaka Seminar at the National Cultural Centre, Tofoa. The guest of honour at the Seminar was Hon. Lupepau'u Tuita who is an extremely talented Lakalaka performer. Also at the Seminar was Baron Vaea of Houma (87 years of age), who performed at the 1967 Coronation of His Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV.
The seminar brought together approximately 25 people who were experienced in the development, performance and study of Lakalaka. Participants listened and discussed a range of issues surrounding Lakalaka and its development with an overall objective of working toward the performance of Lakalaka's during the coronation of His Majesty King George Tupou V in August 2008.
Over the two days, the participants discussed a number of aspects of Lakalaka. Two of the main issues that they raised were:
1) The numbers of young people involved in performances has declined over the years.
2) The migration of Lakalaka practitioners overseas.
All participants agreed that the tow main issues are intricately linked and that there was an urgent need for Lakalaka practitioners who remain in Tonga to pass on their knowledge and skills to the next generation.

On a positive note, the performance of Lakalaka's has gained popularity in Tongan communities overseas, so that knowledge and understanding of Lakalaka's continue abroad. Many practitioners in Tonga, annually travel overseas to teach the Lakalaka.
Participants will meet again on Wednesday 20th February for a practical Lakalaka session where they will perform and discuss Lakalaka movements and compositions in more detail.
